Plans for the construction of hundreds of villas and other tourist facilities on Padar Island,
Komodo National Park
, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), now raises concerns related to the fate of Komodo Komodo.
PT Komodo Wildlife Ecotourism (KWE) plans to build 619 facility units, including 448 villa units, in one of the Komodo Komodo habitats. This development is the main focus because it has the potential to disrupt the ecosystem and the movement of the ancient animal.

Second
, Analysis of Environmental Impacts (AMDAL) or
Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA) compiled by a team of experts from IPB has identified several serious potential impacts.
The AMDAL document, which was presented in a public consultation at Golo Mori on July 23, 2025, said that several development locations were the main area of Komodo to find food.
Potential Impact of Development on Komodo Komodo
According to the expert team, there are three main potential impacts of this development activity:
1. Disruption of movement and habitat: Development in the valleys that become the main habitat of the Komodo dragon can interfere with their natural movements, even forcing them to stay away from the development site.
2. Natural activities are disturbed: The presence of workers and construction activities will interfere with the natural activities of Komodo dragons, such as nesting and finding food.
3. Changes in behavior: waste from the kitchen and food scraps at the construction site can make Komodo dragons accustomed to finding food in the disposal area, which has the potential to change their natural behavior.
Mitigation Recommendations for Commodo Protection
To anticipate these negative impacts, the AMDAL expert team recommended a number of strict mitigation steps:
– Stage System (
Elevated
): All tourist facilities must be built with an elevated system to minimize disturbances in the movement of dragons below.
– SOPs and education of workers: Developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for workers regarding the importance of maintaining and protecting Komodo dragons and other dangerous wildlife.
– Emergency Response System: Preparing an emergency response system for handling animal disorders, including providing drug boxes and medical medicines.
– Installation of information boards: Installing information boards in areas that are easily visible related to dangerous wildlife such as dragons and poisonous snakes.
– Safe Waste Management: Building a storage and disposal system for food leftovers that are not visited by animals, especially dragons and snakes.
– Gradual safety fence: Building a fence in the development area based on the construction stage.
– Reporting Komodo Nest: Workers are required to stop working and immediately report to the TNK Center if you find the Komodo Nest.
– Periodic monitoring: Carry out routine monitoring of Komodo dragons and nesting places, coordinating with Komodo National Park officers and other related parties.
