began to move together in the Japanese sea since last weekend.
The maneuver is part of an effort to strengthen their strategic partnership while balanceting the dominance of the global order led by the United States.
The joint exercise titled ‘Joint Sea 2025’ began in waters near the Port of Vladivostok, Russia, and will last for three days, according to the official statement of the Chinese Ministry of Defense on Sunday (3/8).
The exercise will include a simulation of the rescue of submarines, anti-submarine operations together, air defense and missiles, and maritime battles.
A total of four Chinese warships took part in this exercise, including the Shaoxing and Urumqi controlling boats, along with a number of Russian Navy ships, the Ministry said.
After the training is completed, the two countries are also scheduled to conduct sea patrols in related areas in the Pacific region.
Military relations are getting tighter
This joint exercise is part of the annual series that has been carried out by China and Russia since 2012. Last year, the training was held along the southern coast of China. However, for this year, training was held in the Japanese Sea.
In its annual report last month, the Japanese Ministry of Defense warned that military cooperation between China and Russia which was increasingly closely raised a serious concern for regional security.
Even so, the Russian Navy Pacific fleet emphasized that this exercise is defensive and “not aimed at other countries,” according to a report from a military analysis portal owned by the US Navy.
Chinese attitude towards the Ukraine War
China has continued to strengthen relations with Russia in recent years, including providing economic support for Moscow affected by Western sanctions due to invasion to Ukraine.
Although it never condemned the war that had been going on for more than three years, China claimed herself as a neutral party.
China routinely calls for the battle to end immediately, but also accusing Western countries to extend conflict by continuing to supply weapons to Ukraine.
Last Friday, the Chinese Ministry of Defense stated that this year’s joint exercise was aimed at “deepening a comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two countries.
