One Battle After Another
considered to be getting closer to winning Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars. This assessment emerged after the latest film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Feature at the 2025 Gotham Awards.
The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio won, competing with Bugonia, East of Wall, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee, and Train Dreams in the nomination.

on Tuesday (2/12) stated that One Battle After Another’s victory at the 2025 Gotham Awards gave him greater potential to win the Best Picture Oscar.
This is because six of the 16 Best Picture winners were Gotham Awards winners, such as The Hurt Locker (2009), Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), Nomadland (2020), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
Similarly, the Best Picture nominations are expected to be filled by the nominees for the Best Feature Gotham Awards.However, Sinners, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, Wicked: For Good, and Avatar: Fire and Ash are also potential nominees.

Winning Best Picture is certainly a significant achievement for Anderson, who has never won the award before.
There Will Be Blood (2007), Phantom Thread (2017), and Licorice Pizza (2021) were all previously nominated for Best Picture, but none won.
He received a Best Director nomination, but missed out on trophies for There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, Licorice Pizza.So, One Battle After Another can give him a new history.
In addition to praise for the overall film and Anderson’s excellent direction, many One Battle After Another reviews celebrated the performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor.
All are considered strong Oscar contenders in various acting categories, even amid a highly competitive year.
One Battle After Another tells the story of Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is a former member of the revolutionary group French 75. Dozens of years ago, he was involved in various missions with the aim of freeing immigrants from special detention.
However, Bob’s life as a member of French 75 was abandoned after he was blessed with a child named Willa Ferguson (Chase Infiniti), from his relationship with another member named Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor).
Bob focuses on taking care of his daughter, especially since he lost contact with Perfidia.However, that quiet life changes when his nemesis, Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn) appears again after 16 years.
One Battle After Another was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.This film is PTA’s latest work after Licorice Pizza (2021) as well as the director’s comeback event after four years.

Paul Thomas Anderson has been working on the One Battle After Another script for more than two decades.That opportunity finally opened when this project got the green light from Warner Bros.Pictures in June 2023.
