Mount Semeru
, which is located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regency, East Java, experienced an eruption on Saturday (9/13/2025) afternoon with the height of the eruption column reaching 500 meters above the peak.
According to Mukdas Sofian, Mount Semeru Observation Post officers, eruption occurred at 15.14 WIB with volcanic ash columns as high as around 4,176 meters above sea level.
“The ash column looks white to gray with thick intensity, leading north and northwest,” he said in a written report received in Lumajang, as reported

The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and lasts for 115 seconds.Mukdas added that on Saturday, Mount Semeru recorded an eruption five times.
The first eruption occurred at 00.59 WIB without visual visual eruption observed.The second eruption at 05.09 WIB produced the eruption column as high as 400 meters above the peak.
The third eruption took place at 09.39 WIB, not visible visually but was recorded in a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 122 seconds.
The fourth eruption occurred at 13.45 WIB with ash column as high as 300 meters above the peak, white to gray, pointing southwest.The fifth eruption occurred at 15.14 WIB, as mentioned earlier.
At present, Mount Semeru is still in alert status (Level II).Therefore, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of appeals.The community is prohibited from carrying out any activity in the southeast sector along the visit to a distance of 8 kilometers from the peak, which is an eruption center.
In addition, activities outside the distance are not allowed in a radius of 500 meters from the river bank along the visit, because it is at risk of expanding hot clouds and lava flow to a distance of 13 kilometers from the peak.
Mukdas also emphasized that people do not move within a radius of 3 kilometers from the crater or peak of Mount Semeru, given the dangers of incandescent stone.
PVMBG urges residents to be aware of the potential of hot clouds, lava falls, and rain lava along the river or valleys that bounce on the summit of Mount Semeru, especially along the visiting kobokan, besuk bang, twin besuk, and besuk sat, as well as tributaries from besuk kobokan which has the potential to be hit by lava.
