“One crucial aspect that is often overlooked in tackling environmental crime is the involvement of indigenous communities and local communities. They are the true guardians of our forests,” said Raja Juli in his statement, Wednesday (5/11).
On that occasion, Raja Juli said that the Indonesian government had formed a Special Task Force for Recognizing Customary Forests last March.
“Following up on President Prabowo Subianto’s direction, (we) set a target to recognize 1.4 million hectares of new customary forests during the 2025-2029 period,” he said.
Raja Juli said that recognizing customary forests is not only a form of respect for the rights of indigenous peoples, but has also been proven to reduce the rate of deforestation by 30-50 percent, according to SOIFO 2024 data.
“Through support for community-based forest governance, Indonesia is strengthening legal clarity, tenure security and sustainable forest management,” he said.
“Therefore, accelerating this recognition is very important. Equally important is our commitment to recognizing Indigenous Peoples and local communities,” he continued.
Furthermore, Raja Juli also called for cross-border cooperation and global data exchange to tackle environmental crimes such as illegal wildlife trade and deforestation.
