“Maritime exploration company Ocean Infinity will carry out a search in a target area, which is assessed as having the highest probability of finding the plane,” the ministry said, quoted by AFP.
The last search carried out in the southern Indian Ocean was stopped last April because it was “not the season”.
This latest search was held based on principles
“no find, no fee”
, where the Malaysian government will only pay if Ocean Infinity finds the plane.
In 2018, Ocean Infinity also led a search but to no avail. An initial Australian-led search across an area of 120,000 square kilometers in the Indian Ocean over three years also found almost no trace of the plane apart from a few pieces of debris.
The Malaysian Ministry of Transport also confirmed the government’s commitment to providing a solution to the families affected by this incident.
The Boeing 777 plane carrying 239 people disappeared from radar screens on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.Two-thirds of the passengers are Chinese citizens, while the others are citizens of China, Indonesia, Australia, as well as several citizens of India, the US, the Netherlands and France.
Various theories emerged after the incident. One of them called veteran pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah a “criminal”.A final report released in 2018 pointed to air traffic control failures, and said plane paths were changed manually.
