Continue to grow.
That attitude marks a significant shift in political position to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, especially in the midst of the increasing Israeli military violence in Gaza which has killed more than 59 thousand Palestinians.
The latest, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country would officially recognize Palestine as a country.
Likewise with the British under Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canada under Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The recognition is planned to be officially announced at the UN General Assembly next September.
The steps of France and Britain which are the main strengths of Europe and permanent members of the UN Security Council, are seen as a strong signal from Western countries who began to take the opposite attitude of Israel’s policies, even against the flow of traditional support for Tel Aviv.
Before France, Britain and Canada, a number of other Western countries had already taken similar steps.
The following is a list of Western countries and the United States allies that began to recognize Palestine and against the interests of Israel related to Gaza.
Sweden
In 2014, Sweden became the first Western European country to officially recognize Palestine.This step had received criticism from Israel, but became an important precedent in Europe.
Ireland
In May 2024, Ireland officially recognized Palestine, stating that “It is no longer possible to be silent against the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
Spanish
On the same day with Ireland, the Spanish government also announced recognition of the Palestinian state, saying that the solution of two countries could no longer only be an empty discourse.
