.Is La Nina’s appearance potentially raising rainfall in Indonesia?
BMKG, in the 2025/2026 rainy season prediction report in Indonesia, revealed that El Nino Southern Southern Oscillation (ENO) predictions showed a neutral Enso tendency throughout 2025
“The impact of La Nina one of them is the increase in rainfall in a number of areas, especially during the rainy season 2025/2026,” said Guswanto, Deputy for BMKG Meteorology, when contacted

La Nina is a climate phenomenon that causes rainfall in an area to fall excessively.Different from El Nino which is characterized by high temperatures in the Pacific Ocean around the equator, La Nina is characterized by low temperatures.
La Nina’s condition can contribute to increasing rainfall in a number of regions of Indonesia.Meanwhile, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently in the negative phase and is predicted to last until November 2025.
Guswanto added that 67 percent of Indonesia’s territory has the potential to experience annual rainfall of more than 2,500 mm, including Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua.
BMKG predicts that the rainy season 2025/2026 will take place longer than usual.According to BMKG the rainy season 2025/2026 is predicted to progress or arrive earlier than habits in most regions.
Meanwhile, the peak of the rainy season is predicted to occur in November to December for West Indonesia, and January to February for the southern and eastern regions.
“The peak of the rainy season 2025/2026 is predicted to occur in November to December 2025 in western Indonesia. And January to February 2026 in southern and eastern Indonesia.
“The duration of the rainy season 2025/2026 is predicted to be longer than usual,” he added.
The beginning of the rainy season in Indonesia does not occur at the same time.BMKG explained as many as 333 season zones (ZOM) with 47.6 percent of Indonesia’s territory is predicted to enter the rainy season in September to November 2025. Meanwhile, parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan have entered the rainy season before September 2025.
Then, the rainy season will expand gradually to the southern and eastern regions, with most regions predicted to start experiencing the rainy season in September, October and November 2025.
In addition, compared to normal, the rainy season 2025/2026 is predicted to advance or come earlier than the average climatological in most parts of Indonesia. The area that experiences a advanced rainy season is 294 Zom or 42.1 percent.
The condition of the accumulation of rainfall in the rainy season 2025/2026 or the nature of the season is generally predicted to be in the normal category. That is, the rain season is more wet or drier than usual.
