Singer and actor
Justin Timberlake
recently revealed the conditions
health
which had made him almost cancel the world tour.
Through an upload on Instagram, Timberlake said that he was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, a disease that had been secretly gnawing.
“Among other things, I have struggled against some health problems and diagnosed with Lyme Disease,” he wrote.
“I don’t say that you feel sorry, but to give a little enlightenment about what I have faced behind the scenes,” he explained.
What is Lyme Disease?
Quote
NHS
, Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through infected lice bites. In North America, this disease is generally caused by bacteria
Borrelia Burgdorferi
, which is carried by black or deer tick.In Europe, the cause can come from the type
Borrelia
other.
These lice usually live in forest areas, bushes, or moisture prays, and are often active in spring, heat, until the beginning of fall.
Because the size is very small, especially when still young, lice bites are often not realized by the victims.
If not immediately recognized and treated, this infection can spread to various organs, ranging from the skin, joints, to the nervous system and heart.
Symptoms of lyme disease

Mayo Clinic
, the symptoms of Lyme disease develop gradually, from the initial stages to advanced.
Stage 1, early local disease (3-30 days after bite):
– Typical rashes in a round or oval bite area, often resemble targets or
Bull’s-Eye,
– fever and shiver,
– Extreme fatigue,
– headache,
– muscle and joint pain,
– Swelling of the lymph nodes.
However, not all sufferers show a rash, so at this stage many cases are neglected.
Stage 2, the disease is spread early (3-10 weeks after the bite):
– The rash spreads to other body parts,
– Pain or neck stiffness,
– Facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy),
– Heart rhythm disorders,
– Pain and numbness in the hands or feet,
– Disorders of vision due to inflammation of the eye nerve.
This stage shows that infection begins to spread through the bloodstream.
Stage 3, the disease is spread further (2-12 months after the bite):
– Chronic arthritis, especially in the knee,
– recurrence of pain and joint stiffness,
– Prolonged neurological problems,
– In Europe, chronic skin changes can be called
Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans
.
Risk and complications
The risk of contracting Lyme disease increases if you:
– Frequent activities in the open like forests or grasslands.
– Staying or visiting endemic regions such as eastern and central North America, as well as parts of Europe.
– Do not immediately remove lice from the skin (in the first 24 hours of infection can still be prevented).
If not treated, infection can develop into autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, even cognitive disorders. Some sufferers experience a condition called
Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome
(PTLDS), namely the symptoms that survive even though the treatment has been completed. The symptoms can be in the following:
– Chronic fatigue
– joint pain or muscle
– Memory and concentration problems.
Can be prevented but difficult to recognize
One thing that makes it difficult for the diagnosis of Lyme Disease is due to symptoms like flu or other common disorders. That is why many people, including Justin Timberlake, are not aware of his condition until the symptoms develop worse.
Fortunately, if detected from the start, this disease can be cured with oral antibiotics. But in further cases, treatment can require an intravenous antibiotic and longer recovery.
