Macron underlines this negotiations also have an impact on all of Europe.
Meanwhile British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said a meeting with Donald Trump could be a “historical step” for the security of Ukraine and Europe.
“I think we can take forward steps that are very important today, a historic step that can actually be generated from this meeting in terms of security for Ukraine and security in Europe,” Starmer said.
Ceasefire
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said European leaders really wanted to see a ceasefire before further negotiations were held.
“I can’t imagine the next meeting will take place without a ceasefire,” Merz said in a meeting with Putin.”So, let’s try that.”
Merz said that Trump opened the road after US President met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
“Now the road is open to complicated negotiations,” he said.
On the other hand, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the offer to guarantee US President Donald Trump for Ukraine was a “breakthrough” in securing the potential for peace agreement for Ukraine.
“The fact that you have said ‘I am willing to participate in security guarantees’ is a big step, this is really a breakthrough, and that makes a big difference. So, thank you also for that,” said Rutte.
Rutte also thanked the American President for “breaking the deadlock” and succeeded in inviting Putin to the peaceful negotiations.
Donald Trump held a meeting with Zelensky and a number of European leaders in the White House.Those present include, Macron, Merz, Rutte, Starmer.
Then there was Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Trump before the meeting said that he would discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and “possible regional exchange” to end the Russian-Ukraine war.
“President Putin agrees that Russia will receive security guarantees for Ukraine. And this is one of the key points we need to consider, and we will consider it at the negotiating table,” he said.
“I am optimistic that collectively, we can reach an agreement that will prevent future aggression against Ukraine, and I don’t think it will happen,” Trump added.
