ear
have the potential to experience tears. If it is torn, the impact is not only a decrease in the ability to hear, but also infection to decreased quality of life.
The eardrum, or in medical terms is called the tympanic membrane, is a very important thin layer in the hearing system. The eardrum has a big role to capture sound vibrations and continue to the inside of the ear.
ENT specialist, head and neck surgery from RSPI Bintaro Jaya, Andreas Ardiansyah said, the eardrum is torn or known as the perforation of the tympanic membrane can be caused by various factors, ranging from infection, injury, to changes in sudden pressure.
“Hole in the eardrum is often caused by chronic infections, trauma, or barotrauma, namely injuries due to sudden changes in air pressure,” Andreas explained in a media discussion held by RSPI in the Cipete area, South Jakarta, Tuesday (29/7).
Causes of torn eardrums
Some factors that can cause the tear of the eardrum, among others.
1. Chronic infection
Middle ear infections that last a long time can accumulate fluids and pressure, until finally tearing the eardrum.
2. Physical trauma
Injury due to accidents, blows in the ear, or pierced by Cotton Bud can also damage the tympanic membrane.
3. Barotrauma
Drastic changes in air pressure, for example when riding a plane, diving, or exposed to sound explosions, can make the eardrum injured.
Symptoms to watch out for
Damage to the eardrum can cause various disturbing symptoms.Andreas mentioned several signs to be watched out for by patients.
Here are the common symptoms of a torn eardrum:
– Decrease or loss of hearing
– Ears feel ringing (tinnitus)
– The discharge from the ear, can be pus
– sharp and sudden ear pain
– Spinning sensation (vertigo)
– Full feelings in the ear, nausea, to vomiting
Without a whole barrier, a torn eardrum opens the way for germs and bacteria to enter the inner ear.As a result, chronic middle ear infections can occur or chronic suppurative otitis media, which in ordinary language is known as congek.
“If left unchecked, fluids from infection can come out continuously or appear lost. This is at risk of causing more severe hearing loss and even other serious complications,” explained Andreas.
Not only physical, torn eardrums can also affect the quality of one’s life.Decreased hearing makes communication disrupted, work can be hampered, and self -confidence decreases.
Treatment
The good news, a torn eardrum can be corrected through a tympanoplasty procedure, which is a medical action to close the hole in the tympanic membrane, both with and without the reconstruction of other hearing loss.
“Timpanoplasty is a minimum invasive procedure that aims to restore optimal hearing function and prevent recurring infections. The faster it is handled, the better the results,” Andreas said.
If you experience symptoms such as decreased hearing, discharge from the ear, or sudden pain, do not delay yourself.Early detection and treatment can prevent complications and accelerate recovery.
“Ears are our windows to the world of sound as well as a balance of balance. Don’t wait until the small interference turns into a big problem,” Andreas concluded.
