“Gaza is a piece of coastal land located in the trading and ancient maritime route along the Mediterranean coast. The city has been inhabited for thousands of years and is contested by many people – including Pharaoh Egypt, Babylonia, Philistin, and Alexander Agung who surrounded and seized the city of Gaza, killing men and enslaving women and children,” was quoted by Reuters.
Gaza War 1917
In World War I, Britain pushed to the Middle East including Palestine which was then under the Ottoman Turks.
Under political pressure to achieve a quick victory following the defeat in the Western Front in 1916, the leader of General Archibal Murray launched two attacks on Gaza in March and April 1917. But the two attacks failed.
Citing the National Amry Museum site, Muray’s position was later replaced by General Sir Edmund Allenby in June.
Allenby brought a bigger spirit, bringing reinforcements when the power of Türkiye was being eroded by the Arab rebellion. This rebellion has begun since June before and helped weaken the power of Türkiye.
In October 1917, the number of British troops exceeded the number of Turkish troops with a ratio of two to one in the infantry and eight in one in the cavalry in one of the small battlefields where the horsemen could still be used effectively.
To outwit Türkiye, Allenby launched a trick towards the Gaza sector which was tightly guarded. He launched a routine attack and bombing there to distract the enemy, before launching his main attack further east, namely to Beersheba (31 October 1917) on the northern edge of Sinai.
Allenby has won a big victory.Gaza has fallen.Allenby even boasted this victory like a victory in the Crusades. After that victory, the Balfour declaration came out which marked the birth of the state of Israel.
