John F Kennedy (JFK) apparently had scheduled a meeting with one of the generals of the Indonesian National Army.
The plan was set only a few days before he died in the tragic shooting incident on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas.
The meeting plan was revealed in the 45 -hour White House archive recorded released by John F Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, Massachusetts, after being stored for more than six decades.
General Abdul Haris Nasution at that time served as Coordinating Minister for Defense and Security of Indonesia.
In the recording, it was known that on November 19, 1963, the JFK Presidential Team was preparing a meeting schedule with Nasution, which was considered as a strategic figure from Southeast Asia.
“I could not meet on Monday or Friday. Maybe on Tuesday,” JFK said at the time in one of the recording quotes, quoted from jfklibrary.com.
Unfortunately, the historic meeting was never realized.Three days after the conversation, Kennedy was killed while following an open convoy in Dallas.
This event became one of the biggest political tragedies in the 20th century, as well as canceling an important moment of diplomacy between two world military figures.
Meeting to discuss Vietnam and Indonesia’s strategic position
The meeting between Kennedy and Nasution was planned not just diplomatic friendship, but part of Washington’s efforts to respond to the situation in Vietnam and consider Indonesia’s role in the stability of the Southeast Asian region.
At that time, the Kennedy government was facing a great pressure in South Vietnam, ahead of the Massal Military escalation by the US in 1964.
In the recording, Kennedy received a report from his military and diplomatic advisors, including General Victor Krulak and the US special delegation, which described Vietnam in critical conditions.
President Kennedy is said to want to discuss directly with Nasution, known as a military strategist in the Asian region and the author of the legendary book guerrilla points, who are considered to affect Vietnam’s guerrilla tactics against the US.
