Pompeii
, now have to deal with a large fine from the Italian government.
The 51 -year -old Scottish man was caught carrying six artifact flakes, consisting of five stones and one brick, which he took illegally from the ancient Roman archeology site Pompeii.
He was reported by a tour guide who caught him while “picking up paving block flakes” during the night tour. The tour guide then reported it to Italian law enforcement.
A spokesman for the Italian police (Carabinieri) said on Thursday (8/14) that officers found the man outside the area of the Pompeii excavation site, near the Villa Dei Mystery EAV station.
The stolen items were found again and returned to the park.Meanwhile, the tourist was reported for the theft case with weighting.
As reported
Independent
, the unnamed man could face a court call with a potential prison sentence of up to six years and a maximum fine of 1,500 euros or around Rp26 million.
Director of Pompeii Archeology Park, Gabriel Zuchtegel, expressed his gratitude, “Congratulations and thank you to our tremendous tour guides, guards and security staff, as well as to the Carabineri for this collaborative effort to protect our cultural heritage.”
However, this discovery may have saved the Scottish man from the superstition which is trusted for generations. The ancient city which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD has long been trusted to bring bad luck to its thieves.
In 2020, a tourist returned the artifacts he stole from Pompeii 15 years earlier, with the reason that the items were “damned”.The Canadian tourist who was converted claimed that bad luck had “haunted” him and his family since he stole the tiles from the site in the early 20s.
In an effort to ease the anger of the “gods”, the woman who named him Nicole returned the items to a travel agency in an envelope that also contained an apology letter.
Nicole said he was afraid that his actions steal two mosaic tiles, a piece of ceramic, and part of the amphora (jars) became the cause of his family’s financial misfortune and he was diagnosed with breast cancer twice which resulted in a double mastectomy.
