Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (
OJK
) Mahendra Siregar said the phenomenon of ‘the group rarely bought’ (
Rojali
) and ‘the group only asked’ (Rohana) which is widely discussed is a natural thing as a consumer response to economic uncertainty in recent months.
According to Mahendra, the tendency of people to withstand consumption and be more careful is a natural reaction to economic situations that have not been fully stable.
“So when there are more uncertain conditions in the last few months, of course many parties have taken more positions to weigh before making a decision,” he said at a press conference from the OJK Board of Commissioners Meeting in Jakarta, Monday (4/8).
He said the consumer behavior was not much different from the attitude of producers or investors in dealing with uncertainty.
Under such conditions, he continued, all parties tend to wait for clarity before taking further steps, including in terms of expenditure or investment.
Nevertheless, Mahendra said, OJK is optimistic that by improving the direction of economic policy and the description of global uncertainty, people’s consumption behavior will recover gradually.
On that basis, Mahendra said the importance of certainty signals for consumers so that they feel more confident to return to shopping.
“I think that if it happens in the context of consumers, I think it’s only natural. But with a more clear certainty with the results that have been achieved (now), then of course the same as the producer and investor, then consumers will also get better certainty about the decision to determine further spending in the future,” he said.
The terms “Rojali” and “Rohana” are viral acronyms on social media. The term illustrates a close phenomenon associated with the weakening of people’s purchasing power.
Rojali is an abbreviation of the group rarely buy, describing community groups who often visit shopping centers but rarely make purchase transactions.
While Rohana, or the group only asked, referring to visitors who actively wonder about products such as prices, discounts, or features, but did not buy.
